20 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

BLONDE REDHEAD – “BLOOD SPILLED”

NYC trio Blonde Redhead are back with their first new music in three years, and “Blood Spilled” is just the kind of windswept, melancholic dreampop that they do best. Singer Kazu says, “This song embraces our incredible edge over those who no longer have bodies. While we are here on this earth, this is our time, our pain and our joy. We own them. I sing and scream just to hear myself do so until my soul abandons and exits the physical plane. This song is about the free will of our soul and body down to each and every cell.”

ELANOR MOSS – “FIXER”

London-based singer songwriter Elanor Moss releases her debut album next month, and the latest preview is “Fixer,” which she says is “a song about vulnerability, that double-edged sword. It came to me first as this image of how when you love someone it’s like you are a little animal, rolling over and showing your little white belly, exposed and endangered to the power of the other. Everyone has their own particular vulnerabilities, and when you love someone you have to show them; you put that power in their hands. That’s scary. They could hurt you. But that exposed place, that vulnerability, can also be a doorway into something else, some kind of healing. This is the song where the album title comes from.”

NINAJIRACHI & PORTER ROBINSON – “WANNACRY”

Ahead of her set at Lollapalooza, Ninajirachi shared a glitchy new collaboration with Porter Robinson that she said was years in the making.

SMIDLEY – “LOVE IN EVERY DIRECTION”

Foxing are on hiatus but singer Conor Murphy is staying busy with a new Smidley album that’s out this September, and if you like the poppier side of Foxing you’ll probably like the bouncy, soaring “Love In Every Direction.”

DIS FIG – “THE ACCOUNT” (FT. THE WIND BETWEEN)

Berlin-based producer and vocalist Felicia Chen announced a new album as Dis Fig, What To Make Of These Mortal Hands, due out October 23 via Thrill Jockey. The lead single, “The Account,” features the wind between, and Chen says, “I liked teasing it by opening with a voice that wasn’t mine. I felt like I really needed someone to set the stage for what was about to unfold, like a Greek chorus or narrator, and it was clear to me that he was the right person to do it.”

DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS – “YOU’VE GOT THE LOVE”

Dexys Midnight Runners frontman Kevin Rowland wants you to know that their new single “You’ve Got the Love” has “nothing to do with the house track!” He continues, “When we started writing, I went to Mike [Timothy], have you got any ideas? and he sent me some, and I picked out two or three, which ended up on the album, and this was one of them. It was really simple. I was seeing a woman at the time, and I wrote the lyric, and Mike and I messed around until we were happy with it. The woman is not in my life anymore, so I’ve never told her I wrote it. I suppose I should. It might be nice for her to know.” The band’s final album will be out September 4.

TOVE LO – “DNH”

Tove Lo has given us another preview of her new album Estrus with “DHN,” saying, “put it on repeat and go cause some drama xx.”

CASE/LANG/VEIRS – “PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER” (PATTI SMITH COVER)

Ahead of the release of the 10th anniversary edition of their self titled album, case/lang/veirs, the trio of Neko Case, k.d. lang, and Laura Veirs, have shared their live rendition of Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power.” “So much in the world has changed since this album first came out in 2016, but when I listen back, these songs still hold up to my ears,” Veirs says. “I’m proud of what we made together and am thankful for the opportunity to have been part of it. The experience challenged me, taught me a great deal, and ultimately helped shape the artist I am today.”

ALLAH-LAS – “VINI DA GAMA”

FLORA HIBBERD – “SHELLEY”

“A song for the Shelley in your life, or Duvall, or Percy Bysshe… a boxing match around the kitchen table,” Flora Hibberd says of the latest single off her second album, Mammoth, which is due out on October 16 via 22TWENTY. “Lush country in the creepy sense. Video recorded in Paris and elsewhere in Summer with the pals.”

JULIA HOLTER – “MY LOST ONE”

Materia, Julia Holter’s new companion to 2024’s Something in the Room She Moves, is out next month, and she’s given us another taste with “My Lost One.” “‘My Lost One’ is a witchy folktale inspired by children’s books with creepy rhymes and nonsense syllables, trees growing through living rooms, and animals doing things in clothes,” she says. “I imagine wildlife moving into my home, a superimposition of the outdoors and the indoors. I think about a squirrel cooking a meal on my stove. What are we conjuring, and what are we truly longing for?”

COCO & CLAIR CLAIR – “COLDPLAY”

Coco & Clair Clair are back with their first new music in two years. About “Coldplay,” they say, “This song encapsulates that one scene in Zola where the white girl is hanging out of the roof of the car and bouncing around with her tongue out before all hell breaks loose. It illustrates the duality of women and how we contain multitudes… Black Cars and yellow cabs, cashmere and beer, longing for someone and hating him at the same time, expecting a private entrance into a dive bar, etc.”

THAO – “SICK OF THE TIMES” FT TUNE-YARDS & THE LINDA LINDAS

“I wanted it to be an anthem that will be used at political rallies, grass roots organizing and mutual aid events, anything that can help us emotionally prepare to activate and to stay politically engaged at all levels, but especially at the local level,” says THAO. New album Show Me is out October 30.

SOUR WIDOWS – “BLOOD IN THE GRASS”

Sour Widows announced their sophomore album, Sigil, and gave us a preview with “Blood in the Grass,” which you can read more about here.

IAN NOE – “THE HEIDELBERG FISHERMAN’S BALL”

Kentucky country singer Ian Noe has announced a new concept double album called Canyon Falls Trailer Band about a fictional band called the Canyon Falls Trailer Band. The first taste is “The Heidelberg Fisherman’s Ball,” which you can read more about here.

TONY IOMMI – “WORLD ALONE”

DINOSAUR JR – “BLOWIN’ UP”

This is one of two Lou Barlow songs on Dinosaur Jr’s new album.

The duo of Dan Howard of Victoryland and Ben Guterl of Forth Wanderers announced their debut album as Billboard Style, and shared the first single, which shares their name. Read more about it here.
