19 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

MIKE D – “CRYPTO”

Where does Mike D fall on the contentious subject of Crypto? The new single from his upcoming solo debut puts him firmly in the no thanks camp, while these electro beats put everyone else on the dancefloor.

EVIL ISLAND – “KING DEATH”

Evil Island, the new band featuring members of Blood Brothers and OFF!, have given us another preview of their debut album Terraform the Afterlife with “King Death.” Johnny Whitney says it’s “a really simple story about a woman who skips bail and is on the run. Someone who fights back with absolutely no leverage against the certainty of being turned into chum. It’s about nihilism—recognizing you have no chance at survival but choosing to fight anyway. It’s an ode to everyone living in their car, bleaching their roots in a truck stop bathroom, refusing to disappear quietly.”

JOSH WINK – “FUTURAMA”

The new single by Philly techno pioneer Josh Wink was inspired by a newly unearthed recording of his first ever LA rave set from 1994.

RIVKAH REYES – “DEBT COLLECTOR”

Rivkah Reyes’ (School of Rock, etc) new single “Debt Collector” was inspired by a breaking up with a partner and then going to a Lorde show with them. “We had a really layered connection and shared grief, so it wasn’t clean or simple,” they say. “The song isn’t about longing so much as it is about compulsion, like trying to re-enter something you already know isn’t stable and convincing yourself you can do it better this time. The ‘debt collector’ idea is about emotional leverage, like I’ll give you whatever you want if it means I still get access to you.”

GB – “THE NEXT DAY”

Copenhagen artist Gustav Bernsten releases his new album as GB, Herzsprung, on August 21 via AD 93, and he’s given us a preview with the jazzy, intricate “The Next Day.”

SPEARMINT – “STOP SINGING BAKER STREET”

Long-running UK indiepop group Spearmint — makers of “A Week Away” and “We’re Going Out” — have a new album Chase Me out next week. It’s a concept album “of success, disillusionment, disconnection, peril, and resurrection. Anchored by three chases across a city at night, book-ended by two out-of-body experiences.” And at least one song vaguely about Gerry Rafferty’s sax-fueled hit.

FENNE LILY – “THANK YOU SORRY”

Fenne Lily’s fourth album, Win Win, arrives on October 23 via Nettwerk, and the new single is “Thank You Sorry.” “Broken up with over the phone on Independence Day, I was told everything but the truth,” she says. “This song is the truth; that I became an unwanted guest in a relationship, that I was treated like I meant nothing. I made something out of being nothing to someone.”

MORMOR – “DON’T NEED IT” & “TOUCH”

MorMor has given us another preview of his “new era” with a pair of new singles, “Don’t Need It” and “Touch.” Of “Don’t Need It,” he says, “At its core, the song can mean a lot of things but for me, it marked the end of a long search for love, and even for a father figure, or external validation. There’s pain in that realization, but also a real sense of liberation, letting go of that need and making space for something new.”

FUNDIDO – “MELT”

Latane Hughes and Billy Scher started out spinning Balearic cuts late at night in the front room of Baby’s All Right, and soon their party moved to the Brooklyn venue’s main room. After a decade of hit parties, they’ve now started making their own music. Back in March, Fundido released their great debut single, “Get a Grip”, on DFA, and now they’re back with a second 12″ via DJ Tennis’ Life and Death Records.

MATT BERNINGER – “MARTINI ME FATSO”

Matt Berninger of The National calls his new solo single “Martini Me Fatso” “a tipsy prayer,” adding, “I was a little angry at god. I don’t think there is a god but if there is I want them to know I’m pissed. Monica is my harmonica.”

BRANDON FLOWERS – “PARADISE”

Brandon Flowers of The Killers releases his new “country western” album THRASHER next month, and he’s given us another preview with the toe-tapping “Paradise.”

LEON BRIDGES – “LIGHT THE WAY,” “TEARS OF JOY, ILLUSION,” “YOUR LOVE IS ELECTRIC”

Leon Bridges gave us a first preview of his fifth album, Happiness Anytime, which the first four tracks. Read more about them here.

JAMES BLAKE, TRAVIS SCOTT & LUDWIG GÖRANSSON – “WHEN I’M HOME”

Christopher Nolan‘s much anticipated big-screen, IMAX-shot film adaptation of Greek epic The Odyssey is in theaters now and for the score he’s once again collaborated with Ludwig Göransson who also worked on TENET and Oppenheimer. For the closing credits theme, “When I’m Home,” Nolan and Göransson tapped James Blake and Travis Scott (who also worked on TENET). All four of them get a writing credit on this song.
